LAPU-LAPU'S INTERNATIONAL COASTAL ECOLOGY WEEK: "THE STATE OF MACTAN'S COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS" - LECTURE AND OPEN FORUM
Up to Friday, the 15th, perhaps the biggest event to date was the Lecture and Open Forum on "The State of Mactan's Coastal Ecosystems". The lecture was delivered by Doc Amores (Mactanman) and the Forum participants were Hon. Mario Y. Amores, Sangguniang Panlunsod Chairman on the Committee of Environment and Committee on Fisheries, and LLC Divers member; Mr. Ted Ybanez, City Administrator, Task Force Neptune Chairman and LLC Divers member; Mr. Andy Berame, Task Force Neptune and LLC Divers; and Doc Amores. The participants were mainly high school students from STEC, St. Alphonsus Catholic School, and Asian Learning Center, and their accompanying teachers and select administrators.
Doc Amores laid down the facts, tracing the history of Mactan's coastal ecosystems from the abundance of the 1940's to the present crisis-level state - emphasizing the Chinese character for "crisis". (The chinese character is two-part. The first part says "danger" the second, "opportunity").
The students and teachers were rallied to the opportunities presented to the present and future generations to rehabilitate and maintain the coastal ecosystems.
Perhaps the biggest gain from the program was the stimulus imparted on the youth to know and stand for their rights especially in regards to the environment.
After the forum, the DepEd-Lapu-Lapu Director of Science Education came to me and requested for a partnership with DepEd in coastal ecology education programs. OceanCare Advocates Inc and LLC Divers says "Sure will!"
[I would like to thank the City of Lapu-Lapu for allowing us to hold the lecture/forum in the air-conditioned comfort of the newly renovated Lapu-Lapu City Session Hall - Mactanman].
